2003/08/29 - Green Meetings Award Nominations Sought
Nominations are now being sought for the 2004 Environmentally Responsible Meetings Award. The Environmentally Responsible Meetings Award was launched jointly by IMEX, the International Hotels Environment Initiative, and Oceans Blue Foundation at IMEX 2003.
Presented at IMEX, the Award recognises environmental awareness amongst meeting organisers. The aim is to highlight the opportunities that now exist to stage business tourism events in 'green-minded' venues, whilst also planning an agenda in which sustainability issues have been taken fully into account.
In 2003 the Award was won by Meeting Strategies Worldwide, in recognition of their work on the 2002 Forest Leadership Forum. This forum, hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and the Certified Forest Products Council, and held in Atlanta, was one of the greenest conferences ever held in the USA. In total, more than 1.34 tons of waste was recycled and more than $68,000 saved against budget. Meeting Strategies Worldwide made these achievements through a combination of environmental and economic stewardship of transportation, marketing, guest registration, accommodation and catering arrangements, all of which were scrutinised and planned against strict criteria.
Nomination forms for this years Award can be downloaded from IMEX's web site. Deadline for submissions is November 30th 2003. Winners will be announced at IMEX 2004, to be held in Frankfurt, Germany, May 12 - 14, 2004.
The Award is sponsored by IMEX, Oceans Blue Foundation and the International Hotel Environment Initiative. Oceans Blue Foundation is an environmental charitable organization dedicated to promoting education and awareness regarding environmentally responsible tourism. Through its BlueGreen Meetings Initiative Oceans Blue Foundation provides tools and resources to enable meeting professionals to make more environmentally responsible decisions. The International Hotel Environment Initiative serves to encourage the continuous improvement of environmental performance by the hotel industry worldwide.
