Meeting planners looking to make BlueGreen choices will start with the host city. If you can provide information about your city’s sustainability efforts, you’ll be ahead of the competition.
- Establish an Environmental Policy for the CVB, with measures to encourage more sustainable business practices internally and amongst members.
- Survey your city’s conference venues, hotels and other meeting suppliers to find out what environmental programs they offer. Click here for a sample survey (DOC file). Create a database of suppliers ‘green’ programs to help meeting planners make their selections.
- Be ready to suggest off-site events and tours that involve delegates in the natural environment with minimal impact.
- Encourage your members to institute greening programs; hold a contest to reward tourism businesses that have taken measures to reduce their impact.
- Find out what environmental services your city offers, and make your staff aware of them.
- Cooperate with the city government to engage tourism businesses in environmental programs to beautify the city, such as clean-up events.
- Be able to recommend hotels and venues that minimize travel required within the city, or are on public transit routes.
- Suggest planners leave a positive environmental legacy. For example, suggest a clean-up or tree planting event for delegates.
- Prepare an environmental communications kit for meeting planners, to make them aware of the city and CVB’s greening efforts.

The Orlando CVB has developed a database of environmentally conscious tourism options within Orange County and the Central Florida region. The database is part of a larger initiative to foster ‘responsible travel to natural, coastal, cultural and historic sites in a way that enhances the visitors understanding and appreciation of the site while preserving and protecting the resource.’ |
