Choosing a ‘green’ destination city will make your planning process so much easier. But even if the city has already been chosen, there are lots of ways you can work with them to make sure your meeting is as green as possible.
If you’re still deciding where to meet, choose a city that minimizes travel for participants.
- When choosing between countries, pick one with a sound environmental track record. The World Economic Forum is one organization that ranks countries according to sustainability.
- Find out how green the city is. Print this Destination Selection Questionnaire (DOC file), and send it to the local CVB or municipality to find out about their efforts.
- Include a Sustainability Preference clause in your destination selection Request for Proposals. Click here for a sample (DOC file).
- Ask the CVB to help you find venues and suppliers that meet high environmental standards.
- Consider leaving a positive environmental legacy. Click here for some examples.
- Arrange for off-site events and tours that teach delegates about the natural environment with minimal impact. A local eco-tourism operator may be able to assist you.

The Orlando CVB has developed a database of environmentally conscious tourism options within Orange County and the Central Florida region. The database is part of a larger initiative to foster ‘responsible travel to natural, coastal, cultural and historic sites in a way that enhances the visitors understanding and appreciation of the site while preserving and protecting the resource.’ (Source: IACVB Members Survey; 10/30/2000) |
